I already highlighted the situation at Ponte Preta in their previous match against Avaí, but things have now reached an entirely different level. In my opinion, the bottom has been reached.
Ponte Preta are going through one of the most difficult periods in the club’s recent history. After relegation from the Paulista Championship, they are now bottom of the Série B table with a 2-4-18 record and are on an incredible 18-game winless run (0-3-15).
The financial situation has also become critical. The club has reportedly gone around six months without paying salaries, creating enormous internal pressure and leading to protests from supporters.
The situation has now directly affected the first team. Ponte Preta’s senior players have stopped their activities due to the salary delays, meaning the club had to travel to Belo Horizonte with a squad consisting of just 16 youth-team players.
The team will be led by Gilson Kleina, the coach of the youth side. This is an extraordinary situation for a Série B match and represents an enormous drop in experience and quality.
América-MG are also having a disappointing campaign and currently sit 19th in the table, so this is certainly not a match between two teams in good form. However, the circumstances surrounding Ponte Preta are simply too difficult to ignore.
Facing an almost entirely youth-based Ponte Preta lineup, América-MG have an excellent opportunity to take control from the start and finally produce a convincing result.
