Recap
Until last season, Vojvodina were the undisputed powerhouse of Serbian handball, having dominated the domestic scene with 11 consecutive championship titles. However, the loss of the crown to Partizan marked the beginning of a turbulent period for the club.
The situation deteriorated significantly this summer when Dragoljub Zbiljić, the key financial backer of Vojvodina, distanced himself completely from the handball section, effectively leaving the club without its main source of stability and support.
The consequences quickly became visible on the sporting side as well. During the winter transfer window, two of the club’s most important players and Serbian national team players departed – Stefan Dodić joined Veszprém, while VukaÅ¡in Vorkapić and Brazilian international João Pedro da Silva moved to Vardar. More recently, highly talented pivot Andrija Stankov, regarded as one of the brightest prospects in Serbian handball, was sold to Nexe.
Behind the scenes, the financial situation has become extremely alarming. Players have reportedly gone three months without receiving salaries, while several members of the squad are already preparing departures once the season concludes.
Only five days ago in the first match, Partizan secured a convincing 33:27 victory over Vojvodina and given the current circumstances surrounding the Novi Sad club, another triumph for the Belgrade side appears highly likely.
