Spartak Subotica face an extremely difficult challenge in the first round of the UEFA Women’s Europa Cup qualifiers, with Brøndby travelling to Serbia for the first leg. The draw could hardly have been more demanding, as the Danish side are one of the most established clubs in European women’s football and have dominated the domestic scene for decades.
Spartak have also undergone significant changes during the summer transfer window and lost two of their most important players, captain Violeta Slovic and Živana Stupar. As a result, the Serbian champions now have a considerably younger and less experienced squad.
For these young players, this tie represents a valuable opportunity to gain international experience and understand the level required to compete against elite European opposition. However, the lack of experience could also be a major disadvantage against a team of Brøndby’s quality.
Brøndby enter the tie as clear favorites and have already demonstrated their European credentials by eliminating Slavia Prague in the Champions League qualifiers. They possess a deep and experienced squad, featuring numerous Scandinavian players and internationals, while their roster is further strengthened by three quality American players – Tompkins, Kovacs and Pelkowski.
The difference in experience, squad depth and individual quality is substantial. Spartak are still in the process of rebuilding around a young squad, while Brøndby have the European pedigree and quality to control the tie from the beginning.
